FASTSTONE CAPTURE

• Screen capture program with many helpful features -- Version 5.3 is the last freeware version; later versions are shareware
• Download from http://www.aplusfreeware.com/categories/mmedia/FastStoneCapture.html 
• Using FastStone Capture
  • Settings
  • Can use it to capture entire window, active window, rectangular region, or free-hand region
  • Will even do scrolling screens where you have to scroll down to see the entire page -- Most screen capture programs won't do this.
  • Can set it to save in the type of image you want, e.g. save as a jpg, tiff, pdf, or gif
  • Can set it to save image to clipboard, in particular folder, or to image editor
  • Can name the screenshots yourself or have it name them automatically in sequence and with current date in file name
  • Easy to use to make image slideshows for classes, lectures, family history, etc.

OUR TIMELINES.COM

• Freeweb site that generates timeline of your ancestor's life and world events at the time -- http://www.ourtimelines.com/ 
• Click on "Ready to check it out? Just click here" (at bottom)
• Enter name, birth and death years, and click Generate Timeline
• Shows timeline in color with bars of length of time that world event was occurring
• "At Age XX" at end of line is how old our ancestor was when that event happened
• Can add up to 10 additional events for a person -- checking the button for Personal Events makes these enter as yellow bars -- sometimes helps to include your ancestor's death year on events like marriage so the yellow bar shows the length until your ancestor died
• Printing and/or saving timelines
  • Can print the timeline in color or in black and white
  • Can save it with FastStone Capture using the scrolling window feature -- saving as pdf allows scrolling up and down in the saved file
  • Can save it in html webpage format by clicking on File > Save Page As > Webpage HTML Only and tell it where to save the file -- File can then be opened in a browser (e.g. Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer) without being on the Internet

ASSIGNMENT

1. Download FastStone Capture 5.3 and try it out by saving a screenshot of something of interest in your family history.
2. Generate a timeline of your life and then add some personal data and regenerate it.  Save it by saving the html file and open that in a browser afterwards.
