PART 1: "UPDATE MY RECORDS"

The following items represent various ways that patrons might bring names to the Family History Center, to process them in the "Update My Records" program of TempleReady for Windows. Brief directions are given on how to proceed.

1.   Backup file of a PAF 3/4/5 database:

Bring up PAF 3/4/5 and restore the backup. Then close PAF and bring up TRW. Select "Update My Records", open the PAF database that was just restored, and proceed. After updates have been made, close TRW, open PAF 5, and make a new backup, replacing the one you brought. Restore the new backup on your computer at home.

2.   GEDCOM file made with PAF 5.2.18.0, the most recent version of PAF:

Bring up TRW, go to "Update My Records", and open your GEDCOM in the "3½ Floppy (A:)" drive. Then proceed with the updating program. An ".OUP" file will be made on the diskette, containing only the updates. At home, insert the diskette containing the ".OUP" file into your "3½ Floppy (A:)" drive, and open your database in PAF 5.2.18.0. Go to the File menu, and select "Add TempleReady Update...". On the "Add TempleReady Update File" pop-up screen, click on the name of your ".OUP" file and then on "Add". The updates will then be automatically made in your database. (No match/merging will be necessary.)

3.   GEDCOM file made with any other version of PAF 3/4/5:

Bring up TRW, go to "Update My Records", and open your GEDCOM in the "3½ Floppy (A:)" drive. Then proceed with the updating program. TRW will not update your GEDCOM file. Instead, it will create an ".OUP" file, which cannot be imported into your database at home. You will need to take your Update Report home and type the updates directly into your original database.

An alternate approach is to first import your GEDCOM into a new PAF database, and then use "Update My Records" to update that new database. Then, if your GEDCOM consisted of your entire database at home, simply make a backup of this new updated database and restore it in place of your old one. If the GEDCOM consisted of only a part of your home database, you'll need to make a GEDCOM of your new updated database, and import it into your database at home. You'll then need to match/merge all the duplications.

4.   GEDCOM file made with Family Origins or Legacy:

Bring up TRW, go to "Update My Records", and open your GEDCOM in the "3½ Floppy (A:)" drive. Then proceed with the updating program. An ".OUP" file will be made on the diskette, containing only the updates. Recent versions of both Family Origins and Legacy can accept the ".OUP" file, and automatically make the updates without creating duplicate records that need to be merged.

5.   GEDCOM file made with any program other than PAF, Family Origins, or Legacy:

Follow the directions of item #3 above. (If you choose the alternate approach, you won't be able to use a backup -- just make a GEDCOM of the updated database.)

PART 2: "SUBMIT FAMILY NAMES FOR TEMPLE ORDINANCES"

The following items represent various ways that patrons might bring names to the Family History Center, to process them in the "Submit Family Names for Temple Ordinances" program of TempleReady for Windows. Brief directions are given on how to proceed.

Please note: To prevent duplication, it is essential that records be checked in the Ordinance Index prior to submitting them to the "Submit Family Names for Temple Ordinances" program. To do this, one might use "Update My Records" first, but then should search the IGI-Internet for any records the "Update My Records" program did not find.

It is assumed in each of the following cases that the patron has fully searched the IGI-Internet for the names that are being submitted for temple ordinances, and that the file has been updated with any information that was found.

1.   Backup file of a PAF 3/4/5 database:

Bring up PAF 3/4/5 and restore the backup. Then close PAF and bring up TRW. Select "Submit Family Names for Temple Ordinances", open the PAF database that was just restored, and proceed. (In PAF 5, you don't need to close PAF and bring up TRW; simply go to the Tools menu, select "TempleReady", and you are transferred directly into the "Submit Family Names for Temple Ordinances" program.)

Please note that since the "Submit Family Names for Temple Ordinances" program is working directly with your PAF database, any changes or additions you make to your data while using the program are automatically made in your database. This will not be the case in any of the options below, each of which involves bringing the data in the form of a GEDCOM.

2.   PAF-Qualified GEDCOM made for "TempleReady for Windows" with PAF 5:

        or

PAF-Qualified GEDCOM made for "TempleReady for DOS" with PAF 5:

        or

PAF-Qualified GEDCOM made with PAF 3/4:

        or

Any other GEDCOM file, made by any program:

Since the names in all four of these options are brought in a GEDCOM file, the procedure will be the same for each:

Bring up TRW, select "Submit Family Names for Temple Ordinances", and direct the computer to open your GEDCOM file in the "3½ Floppy (A:)" drive. Then proceed with the "Submit Family Names for Temple Ordinances" program.

Note: If you make any changes or additions to your data while using "Submit Family Names for Temple Ordinances", please be aware that the program will not automatically make them in your GEDCOM. Instead, you must make a note of any such changes and type them into your database later.
